Taking Classes Elsewhere
Students wanting to take classes elsewhere need to complete the following steps prior to taking the class to ensure that the class will transfer to Virginia Tech and count as the selected class.
- Search the Transfer Equivalency Database (TED) for course equivalents at Virginia Community Colleges and other two and four year institutions.
- Pick up an Authorization to Take Classes Elsewhere form from your Academic Dean's Office (1046 Pamplin for ECON and the College of Science Administrative Building for ECAS). Fill out an Authorization to Take Classes Elsewhere form and get it approved by the your Academic Dean.
- Upon getting approval from the Dean sign up and complete the class with a C or better.
- Notify the Registrar's Office of the community college or university and have them send your official transcript to Virginia Tech. The address is: Virginia Tech University Registrar, 250 Student Services Building, Mail Code 0134, Blacksburg, VA 24061. For questions call (540)231-6252 or email: registrar@vt.edu
Students who have exceeded 60 hours from another institution or are on suspension are not qualified to take classes elsewhere.
Students must have a grade of C or better for the class to transfer. However, actual grades do NOT transfer to Virginia Tech so they are NOT part of your VT GPA.
Students who do not have the Authorization to Take Classes Elsewhere form complete prior to taking the class will have no excuse for classes not transferring to Virginia Tech as the desired class or area.
