The Internship Program

The following information will help you determine your eligibility for internship credit and to inform you of the steps necessary to secure internship credit. Students must be of Junior or Senior status; have a 2.5 overall GPA, have satisfactory Progress toward Degree, and have consent from the Department. There are two types of internships in the Department of Economics.

The Department Internship is for students who earn an A in ECON 3104 or ECON 2025H. These students can earn 1 credit hour/semester (pass/fail) by working 1 night a week at the Tutoring Center or by conducting a ECON 3104 review session. If you qualify and are interested in doing this, contact Erika Perdue at (540) 231-7726.

The Experiential Internship is an unpaid internship that is related to the major. To participate students need to find their own job. The undergraduate advisor occasionally sends opportunities via the listserv so read these messages if you are looking for a position. The maximum amount of credit for full-time work is 3 hours/semester during the regular academic year or summer. Students working part-time earn proportionately less credit. Credit is pass/fail and does NOT count towards ECON major requirements, but it does count towards overall degree hours as "free elective" credit. The student must be in good standing on Progress Toward Degree and tuition needs to be paid in order to earn credit for an internship.

The process of applying for an internship begins with submitting a Request to Intern form during pre registration week. Print this form and complete prior to starting the internship.

The Employer - Student Internship Agreement must be completed before the semester starts. This form details the expectations of the employer and the student.

The Student Progress Report and the Employer Progress Report must be returned to the Undergraduate Advisor by the middle of the semester. These forms provide information on how the internship is developing.

The Student Final Report and the Employer Final Report must be returned to the Internship Coordinator by the last day of classes of the semester.
