Spring 2009 Commencement Info
For all economics majors:
The University Commencement Ceremony that is held in Lane Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on May 15th. For more information please see the Spring Commencement web page.
The Economics Department ceremony will take place at 11:00 a.m. on May 16th in McBryde 100. Please plan to arrive no later than 10:30 (students will meet in McBryde 113) to get lined up and receive instructions about how the ceremony will proceed. While there is no strict limit on the number of guests you may bring, there are only enough seats in the room for five guests per graduate. Students who have guests that have impaired mobility are encouraged to contact the Economics Department so that we can reserve seating for them. There will be a short graduation speech, we will hand out departmental awards, and graduates will be called up on stage to receive diplomas. This ceremony will take approximately one hour. Please have your family bring cameras if they wish to take pictures of the ceremony as we do not have a professional photographer. The appropriate dress is professional attire (including shoes) and graduation robes. The tassel color for economics majors in the College of Science is copper. The tassel color for economics majors in the Pamplin College of Business is drab (yellow-brown).
For economics majors in the Pamplin College of Business:
College of Business graduates have a choice regarding which ceremony or ceremonies they wish to attend. They can attend the Pamplin ceremony, the Economics Department ceremony, or both. Diplomas for all Economics majors will be awarded at the Economics Department ceremony. Students that only participate in the Pamplin ceremony may pick up their diploma after the department ceremony has ended. All students participating in the Pamplin ceremony will receive empty white envelopes that look identical to those which contain diplomas when they walk across the stage. Unfortunately time limitations preclude our giving individuals a choice about where their actual diploma will be handed to them. You must let Chris LaPlante know which ceremony (or ceremonies) you plan to attend by April 17th.
The Pamplin College of Business ceremony will take place at 2:00 p.m. on May 16th, in Cassell Coliseum – you should have received instructions concerning this ceremony from the college. Additional information is available on the Pamplin web site
For students who wish to "walk" in Spring Commencement:
Students who plan on completing their degree requirements during the summer and want to participate in the spring commencement ceremonies must request permission from the Economics Department. Please contact Chris LaPlante to request an Application to Walk. You must complete and turn in this paperwork no later than April 1st.
